Adults who have not completed high school can demonstrate through the five-part GED examination the attainment of academic skills and concepts normally acquired through completion of a high school program.  A timed test, the GED exam includes the following sections:

  • Language Arts - Writing Skills (including writing an essay)
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • Language Arts - Reading

Special accommodations for the GED exam are available for individuals with documented disabilities.

Applicants for the GED State Exam must be at least 17 years old and withdrawn from school for at least six months.  Registration takes place at 369 Washington Boulevard, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Applicants must have a photo ID and there is a $13 fee if they are 21 years of age or older.  Those who pass the exam are awarded a Connecticut State High School Diploma.

Stamford Adult Education offers a program to prepare residents of Stamford, Darien and New Canaan for the GED exam.  Students must be at least 16 years of age and withdrawn from high school.  Students who are 16 or 17 years old must bring a withdrawal form signed by a parent.  At registration, an appraisal test is administered.  Based on the results, students will be told if they are ready for the State Exam or if they will be placed in a GED or ABE instructional level.

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program provides instruction in reading, writing and math skills to prepare an individual for a high school program, job training or employment.

GED and ABE classes are offered in the morning and in the evening.  The program consists of classroom and computer-assisted instruction.  A certified guidance counselor, Teresa Cavaliero, is available to assist the students with any barriers that might prevent them from being successful in the program.  She can be reached at 977-4941.
